In the 1960s, the American music landscape was powered by a vibrant network of independent record labels. Many—like Motown, Stax/Volt, and Elektra—began as small regional ventures before their success propelled them into national prominence and, ultimately, partnerships with major labels.

Baltimore, Maryland was one of the era’s creative hotbeds. Throughout the ’60s and ’70s, the city nurtured a distinctive musical identity, and local imprints such as Ru-Jac, Soultrain, and Pulse delivered radio favorites that defined the “Sound of Baltimore”—a gritty, deeply soulful flavor of R&B unlike anything else in the country.

Formed in 1966 by Brent Gordon, Jonas Cash, Ed DeJoy and Johnny Powell, Chariot Records stood proudly among these influential independents. Primarily a singles-driven label—though it would issue one rock LP in 1972—Chariot became known for releasing high-energy soul sides that would later be embraced by the Northern Soul movement in the U.K. This scene, rooted in northern England in the early 1970s, celebrated rare, up-tempo American R&B singles from the previous decade. Chariot’s catalog fit the sound perfectly.

At the center of the label’s legacy were Bob Brady And The Con Chords—Baltimore favorites and early champions of what would become Northern Soul. Brady joined the group in 1964, and by 1966 they became Chariot’s first signed act. His soaring, velvety vocals often drew comparisons to Smokey Robinson, and the group even brushed the Billboard Hot 100 with their rendition of Smokey & The Miracles’ “More, More, More Of Your Love.” Decades later, their infectious track “Everybody’s Goin’ To The Love-In” gained new life in a major U.K. advertising campaign for Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Despite releasing six singles for Chariot, Bob Brady And The Con Chords never issued a full-length album—until now.

“It’s A Better World” when you’re groovin’ to Love-In—the definitive collection from the kings of Baltimore soul.`
