Welcome To The World! Omnivore Now Ships Internationally.

We’re writing to hopefully bring a little extra holiday cheer to your turntables, iPods, and CD players for the new year!

We’ve really appreciated your patience over the past month or so since we opened the web store. We’ve been modifying and tweaking it, and trying to figure out the best ways get music directly to you! You’ll now notice that we’ve added Media Mail as an option for our U.S. customers and we can now ship internationally. You’d think that making these changes would be easy but frankly, nothing is easy! We’re very sensitive to how much it costs to ship packages (we buy a lot of records ourselves) and we’ve been trying to find the very best rates. Again, thank you for your patience in this matter!

If you experience any difficulties in ordering in the shop, please email us directly so we can resolve the issue.

That having been said, if you’re a U.S. resident who currently has anything on pre-order with us and would like to have it shipped Media Mail, please simply cancel your order and re-order selecting Media Mail.

Holiday shipping: For orders within the U.S., you must order on or before December 16 for arrival on or before December 24, We highly recommend using the Priority Mail shipping option. For orders shipping outside the U.S., you should not expect delivery on or before December 24.

Omnivore Recordings wishes you and yours a very merry holiday season, and we look forward to bringing you lots of excellent and amazing music in the new year!

Omnivore opens webstore with exclusive Big Star
Third [Test Pressing Edition] on CLEAR vinyl!

Limited-edition of 500 copies pressed on 180-gram CLEAR vinyl
Order Now!

Big Star Clear Vinyl

The Omnivore webstore is now open and you may now purchase Omnivore Recordings releases directly from us!

As our first webstore exclusive, we are releasing 500 copies of Big Star’s Third [Test Pressing Edition] pressed on 180-grm clear vinyl. Same awesome cut and pressing as the black vinyl Record Store Day version, same cool inserts, same cool packaging—a second bite of the apple for those who got shut out on Record Store Day! Limit one per customer, so everyone has a shot. We’re doing this as a huge thank you for being in on the ground floor with us early. So, go get them now! When they’re gone, they’re gone for real. No, we didn’t do any other (or different) crazy color pressings.

Here’s the story: You’re probably aware that back in April, Omnivore’s very first two releases were exclusives for Record Store Day. All copies of Big Star’s legendary album, Third [Test Pressing Edition] and all the copies of our yellow vinyl Buck Owens 7″ “Close Up The Honky Tonks”/”My Heart Skips A Beat” (both early versions) blew off the shelves quicker than quick. It was the biggest Record Store Day yet, and we were really happy to make our debut then and contribute to a great day. (In fact, our Big Star package wound up pictured in Rolling Stone alongside the story about how successful RSD was this year—cool!).

Back when we manufactured the 180-gram black vinyl Big Star package, we also manufactured an additional 500 on 180-gram clear vinyl. Why? So we could offer them to you as the first exclusive made especially for our webstore! Unfortunately, 14 copies escaped the warehouse while we were getting the webstore ready. We were contacted by some of the lucky folks who scored a copy, and we know there have been questions about their legitimacy and origin, we just couldn’t talk about the clear vinyl versions… until now!

We’ll be carrying all our releases in the store, plus there will be exclusives like this one from time to time. We’ll tell our mailing list about them first (and sometimes only)—so if you wanna be in early when we release limited cool things, make sure you’re signed up now and tell all your record-loving pals too.

Thanks very much!

Uh oh . . . Jellyfish now January 10!

There’s a fantastic line (among many) in Jellyfish’s “The Ghost At Number One” which says “How does it feel to be the only one who knows that you’re right.”

That Jellyfish quote works on a number of fronts. Mainly because that’s what this correspondence is about. (And, that it’s a great, flippin’ song.) We made some decisions that may not be popular, but will be better in the long run. In other words, we’ve done what we thought was “right.”

We’ve always said that we just don’t comment on new releases. Why? Because, things go wrong. Things go wrong all the time. Like the Jellyfish releases.

We could tell you the whole grizzly saga of what went wrong with these, why we’ve rejected test pressings and blah blah blah, but instead we just want to tell you that we’re presently working with the great folks at RTI and John Golden Mastering on a third round at making these right–third time’s a charm?

RTI, Golden Mastering and Omnivore Recordings have a firm commitment to stone cold quality. Period. So we’re getting them right–not just floating sub-standard records out there in the hope that you don’t notice.

Meaning? They’re not coming on October 10th, like we said after we had to bump them the first time. We’re taking quite the hit and pushing them back to January 10th and that will allow us the extra time needed to really make sure that these things blow your mind appropriately.

Here’s the really great news–we’re now pressing these on RTI’s wonderful 180-gram vinyl!

So a limited edition of 1,500 copies will be pressed on 180-gram vinyl (Bellybutton will still be on blue vinyl, Spilt Milk will now be on green vinyl). And, that extra weight will not. Cost. You. Any. More. We’re keeping the price the same. Bellybutton will still have its original tri-fold cover for this first run. After the 1,500 copies are sold out, the Bellybutton cover will be a standard jacket and the vinyl for both will be standard weight black vinyl. Pre-orders should be saved in the distributors’ systems, but please check back with whoever you ordered them through.

Thanks for your patience and loyalty. We are not about to jeopardize our reputation by putting out inferior product. We care too much. And, as you’re on this mailing list, you do too.

Jellyfish

Teenage Funk from The Two Things In One!

On October 11 we’ll have another slice of ’70s soul/R&B/funk with the CD & LP release of Together Forever: The Music City Sessions by The Two Things In One. This group of Bay Area teenagers released several local hit singles during their time and are still together today—all original members! The singles that were released on the Music City label back in the day are highly collectible and oh, so hard to find these days. So we’re going to help you out with that as the first 2,000 copies of the LP worldwide will be released on translucent red vinyl (with a special LP-only track too)! Between the 16-track CD and the LP bonus track—all their recorded work is collected here. Get it and dig it!

Check out the first listen of “Let’s Get It Together.”

NEWSFLASH!!! Jellyfish LP’s—now October 11!!!

The beautiful, wonderful, most musically awesome Jellyfish albums are going to be delayed by two weeks. So instead of them showing up to your glee and delight on September 27, they will show up to your equally rapturous happiness on October 11. While we’re sorry for the bump, we’re not sorry for trying everything possible to make all our releases the absolute best for you. Blame us for wanting them to be utterly fantastic, but when the first try didn’t work for us (we won’t bore you with the details), we went back to square one. If you’re angry or sad, get out your cosmic Crayolas and color Jellyfish and you’ll feel better. You can grab your original promotional treat from Bellybutton here. Heck, send it in and we’ll post it online!

Steve Roeser on Leon

Great Steve Roeser piece on Leon Russell’s Live In Japan—read it here first!

During the years 1970 to 1975, few artists in rock were hotter or had more going on in their music careers than Leon Russell. After having started playing piano professionally in his teens in his native Oklahoma, Leon (birth name Claude Russell Bridges) trekked out to Los Angeles by the early Sixties and soon became one of the most in-demand recording session players in Hollywood.

Very few of the many notable Phil Spector Gold Star Studio recordings do not have Leon on piano. The Beach Boys, Bobby Darin, Glen Campbell and numerous others recording in L.A. in that era benefited from Leon’s expertise on the 88s. “I was the triplet guy,” was the way he put it, summing up how he was perceived by West Coast record producers who wanted to book the piano player who would get the job done most efficiently.
